Navigating Biological Products

Biological products, or biologicals, are a diverse group of agricultural inputs derived from living organisms such as plants, insects, microorganisms, or fungi. In potato production, these products can be used alongside conventional management practices for a variety of purposes such as improving nutrient efficiency and pest and disease management.

Biologicals do not replace fertilisers or pesticides but may be used to complement them. Biologicals are generally used to complement plant growth goals, traditional nutrient management and existing pest and disease control objectives. They are available in various forms and may be applied as seed treatments, in-furrow applications, foliar sprays, or through fertigation, depending on the product and the intended outcome.

The aim of this fact sheet is to support growers in navigating the terms used with biologicals, putting forward some considerations when choosing a biological product and some tips for trialling products on farm.
