Cover crops for potato growers
Cover crops are being rediscovered as important tools for improving soil structure and health, controlling soilborne disease and weeds, reducing erosion and nutrient loss, and adding nitrogen.
Dr Kelvin Montagu delivered an interactive online training course on cover crops for potato farmers and agronomists and here are the slides from that course.
There is also a template that growers can use to assist them to answer the important question: What are the three tasks you are going to action to help you achieve your cover cropping objectives?
And the points to consider:
Planning - when, who, how
Sowing - when, who, how
Termination - when, who, how
Seed - ordering, source
Research - suitable species, supporting materials, technical support
Equipment - when, what
