PotatoLink Webinar: Future proofing potato production: emissions, resilience and market expectations

Thank you for joining our PotatoLink webinar, Future Proofing Potato Production: emissions, resilience, and market expectations. If you missed the live session, or would like to revisit a particular topic, you can use the sections below to navigate through the recording.

Chris Cosgrove – Sustenance Asia

05:25 - 23:17‍ ‍Understanding sustainability and GHG in fresh produce

Chris explains the evolving sustainability and emissions reporting landscape, why greenhouse gas accounting is becoming increasingly important for the industry, and how growers can view emissions reporting as an opportunity to improve efficiency, resilience and market access. He also introduces the Horticulture Greenhouse Gas Accounting Framework (H-GAF) and outlines how it can be used to estimate on-farm emissions.

About the presenter:
Chris is one of Australia’s most experienced agrifood sustainability practitioners. He has been involved in corporate sustainability since 2002, and has specialised in agrifood sustainability since 2014, delivering pragmatic outcomes for clients in most agriculture industries. He is particularly focused on collaboration & making complex sustainability concepts simple & actionable.

Marguerite Renouf – Lifecycles

23:17 - 42:00 Life cycle assessment of Australian Potato Production - Hort Innovation project

If you’d like to register your interest to contribute data for the lifecycle analysis industry sample, scan the QR code below.

Marguerite presents early findings from the levy-funded Industry Level Life Cycle Assessment project, sharing how greenhouse gas emissions are distributed across potato production systems. She explains the major emissions hotspots, discusses where the greatest opportunities for emissions reduction exist, and outlines how industry benchmarks will support growers in the future.

About the presenter:
Marguerite has 20 years of experience in sustainability assessment in both academia and consulting, specialising in environmental life cycle assessment (LCA). She is an authority on agricultural LCA in Australia, with a long track record working with the agriculture, food and bio-products sectors. Marguerite is a Senior Scientist and Head of Business Development at Lifecycles, Australia’s leading sustainability measurement consultancy. Lifecycles is based in Melbourne, but Marguerite work out of their office in Brisbane.

Dr Tory Clarke – Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, University of Tasmania

42:00 - 55:44 Zero Net Emissions Horticulture Demonstration Farm

Tory shares early results from the Zero Net Emissions Horticulture Demonstration Farm in Tasmania, demonstrating how emissions reduction strategies are being tested under commercial-style production systems. She discusses nitrogen management, the use of the H-GAF tool to estimate emissions, and how measured field data will be used to improve emissions accounting tools and support practical decision-making for growers.

About the presenter:
Tory is a crop physiologist and Senior Research Fellow at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, University of Tasmania. Her research applies crop physiology to practical challenges in horticulture, helping improve productivity, sustainability and resilience in commercial production systems. She works closely with growers and industry to develop evidence-based strategies that support better crop and environmental outcomes.
