Frank Mulcahy explains during his interview with ABC Radio - Tasmanian Country Hour (~21 minute mark), that the parameters under which the varieties were chosen in the 1980s may be different to the parameters under which they are chosen now. As the growing environment changes, there may be a shift in what the varieties need to deliver. Re-selection of older varieties may provide a solution to some on-farm challenges like disease management, where for example, a variety with good resistance to powdery scab can be utilised in a rotation to help reduce the load of the pathogen in the soil.
