Variety Field Walk in Forthside, Tasmania

  • Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture 124 Forthside Road Forth, TAS, 7310 Australia (map)

Date: 21st April 2022

Time: ~12 PM, after the conclusion of the Agronico event.

Location: 124 Forthside Road, Forthside TAS.

Details:

Doug Clark and his team at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) in Forthside have planted 65 potato cultivars for a total of 99 lines, to be viewed at harvest in mid-late April. Some of the varieties are still being grown, others have been discarded in the pursuit of finding varieties to better meet customer’s needs.

Did you know Kennebec was the mainstay french fry variety before Russet Burbank arrived? Did you know that Leven (named after the Leven River that runs through Ulverstone, Tasmania) was bred as a long season french fry variety with Kennebec qualities?

This is a great learning opportunity as we take a stroll through varieties new and old.
